(CBS/AP) MANILA, Philippines - A 7.9-magnitude undersea earthquake struck off the eastern Philippines Friday, the U.S. Geological Service said
The temblor struck about 66 miles east-southeast of Guiuan Island (about 500 miles east-southeast of Manila) at 8:47 p.m. local time.
A tsunami warning is in effect in several coastal areas in the region, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Guam, the Northern Marianas and Papua New Guinea.
The head of the Philippine seismology agency, Renato Solidum, said that residents living along the coastline of eastern Samar Island were advised to evacuate to high ground in case of the tsunami.
There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
