EKET, Nigeria (AP) — Militants have attacked an Exxon Mobil Corp. offshore rig near Nigeria's restive and oil-rich southern delta.
In a statement Monday, Exxon Mobil's Nigerian subsidiary said "unknown armed persons" boarded the rig. The company did not say whether any damage had been done to the structure or if there were any injuries in the assault.
An official with a private security told The Associated Press that attackers hit a rig operating off the coast of Akwa Ibom state. The official said security forces on the rig entered into a prolonged gun battle with the militants.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to journalists.
The attack comes after seven expatriates were kidnapped last week from another rig in the area.
