MEDICAL LAKE, Wash.—A Medical Lake homeowner blames bees for Tuesday’s five acre brush fire.

Investigators determined someone set a small fire to force bees from a tire but that fire quickly spread to the dry grass.

Firefighters call the brush fire an accident.

Homeowners in Medical Lake grabbed hoses to protect their homes as flames from the wind-whipped brush fire came within feet of their houses.

Spokane County fire officials say the fire started around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday in a field northwest of Medical Lake High school. It burned five acres and singed several yards.

Official say winds in the area were a factor. There was some concern that the wind could carry burning embers and reignite the fire. Gusts reached 18 miles per hour in Medical Lake during the fire.

Jeff Kehoe lives in the area and said volunteers from the City grabbed shovels and started digging trenches to create a fire line.

15 to 20 homes were evacuated, but have since been allowed back into their home

Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the night Tuesday watching for any flare ups. They have set up a command post at Medical Lake High School. All Washington State Patrol deputies have cleared the area.
