SPOKANE-- Crews responded to a brush fire in Southwest Spokane County Thursday afternoon.

Around 2 p.m. crews were called to a brush fire at Mt. Carmel and Andrus near Cheney.  People miles away reported seeing smoke.

Spokane County First District 3 officials say a couple of contractors were welding a gate when the sparks caught fire and started spreading.  They reportedly tried to use a fire extinguisher to put it out, but it wasn’t able to knock out the flames.  The fire eventually spread from the gate up a hill near some Cheney School District property.

Air support was called off of a 40 acre fire near Ford and sent to battle the Andrus fire.

The fire was about 4.5 acres in size according to officials. There are homes in the area, but none were threatened.

The fire is contained but the winds are still an issue.  As of 5 p.m. firefighters are still putting out hotspots.

Officials say Andrus Road will be closed until about 6 p.m.
