SPOKANE-- Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel Company announced plans to begin nonstop air service between Honolulu (HNL) and Spokane (GEG) beginning early next year.

The once-per-week route will depart Spokane on Saturday mornings, and return on Friday evenings.

The carrier will offer introductory fares as low as $180.00 one-way, including taxes and fees, and must be purchased by August 14, 2012, for travel by April 16, 2013.

The base rates do not include some services and amenities that are typically standard on other major airlines. Customers can expect to pay additional fees for assigned seating, carry-on and checked luggage, as well as snacks and refreshments.

KREM 2 News did a price comparison between Allegiant Air and Alaska Airlines for a trip departing Spokane on March 2, 2013, with a return trip of March 8, 2013. The following is a breakdown of what we found; these rates are subject to change at any time depending on seat and rate availability.

A search for a nonstop flight on Allegiant Air for the above travel dates resulted in a quoted price of $468.00 round-trip, whereas the Alaska Airlines ticket would cost $720.80. For both tickets, this included assigned seating and a carry-on bag. Sodas and snacks will also cost extra on Allegiant.

Through its subsidiary, Allegiant Air, the travel company operates a low-cost, all-jet passenger airline focused on linking travelers from small to medium-sized cities, to world-class leisure destinations.

"Allegiant's entry into the Hawai'i market has opened up new gateway cities for the state," said Mike McCartney, Hawai'i Tourism Authority president and CEO. "We are pleased to welcome direct service from Spokane, Wash. and look forward to supporting Allegiant's service and promoting unique experiences for our guests to the Hawaiian Islands."

Spokane International Airport has been without a direct flight to the Hawaiian Islands for nearly a decade.  Airport officials say nearly 50,000 people travel to Hawaii from Spokane every year, connecting through other gateway cities such as Seattle and Bellingham.
