SPOKANE, Wash. -- Instagram is almost surpassing Facebook when it comes to popularity according to recent social media polls.
The smarthphone app gives people the ability to share pictures instantly and with everyone. Yet, it also makes your photos accessible to everyone else using Instagram.
Social media experts warn parents to keep an eye on children using Instagram. They said easy access to photos makes kids vulnerable.
“They think they're exchanging photos with their friend, but lo and behold, it's really the entire Instagram population and anyone who has internet access,” said Social Media Expert Jeri Prophet, “I wish there was some sort of technology 101 for parents.”
One Spokane mom, Jonna Damiano, is shocked at how easily these suggestive and sexual photos can be found.
“There's so many new things coming out, I don't even know how to protect my kids,” said Damiano.
However social media experts told KREM 2 News that many predators know what parents do not.
“They can lie about their age, they can learn where these students are frequenting, and show up at those locations, chance meetings,” said Prophet.
