NEWPORT, WA. -- Volunteers from Spokane, Sandpoint, Colville, Priest River, Newport and Montana removed 43 sled dogs after the owner called Eastern Washington Siberian Rescue to surrender the dogs.

The dogs were found living in deplorable conditions.

They were found in standing water, with minimal, if any shelter, with no food or drinking water, and tethered on three to four foot chains.

Two of the dogs were suppose to weigh between 50 and 60 pounds. Instead, they weighed in at 35 pounds and were immediately taken to the veterinary clinic.

The rest of the other dogs were taken to rescue groups, foster care, and temporary shelters around the Spokane area.

Nine of the dogs are at Spokane Humane Society.

The owner is not facing any charges at this time.

For more information about adopting the dogs or to make donations you can visit www.ewsr.org.

This is very sad. I checked backed, to see if the owners were being charged with animal abuse? No word yet? There is NO EXCUSE for the owners of these dogs to not get prosecuted. If they were having "Financial Difficulties", they should have called earlier and not wait so long. These dogs were chained up outside and starving to death. Whomever is making excuses for these owners, SHAME on you!

Again, the owner asked for HELP ... which is more than most people do and the outcomes are much worse!

the owners , they called to give up the dogs - I'm not too sure that coming down all hard legally on them would be the right thing to do - I wish I had a ranch to take one or two of them - Huskys are AWSOME!

The people owning these dogs fell upon dire times and were no longer able to financially care for these animals. I met the owner, some family members, and 27 of the adult sled dogs during two visits to the property, a week ago Tuesday and last Wednesday, just before all the remainder of the sled dogs were removed from the property. The conditions were truly sad for all. With two vehicles we transported 6 adult dogs to the Panhandle Animal Shelter. They, are currently being cared for by staff and volunteers. When ready, they will be altered and put up for adoption into "forever" homes. They are being housed in a separate area where the public is welcome to visit 7 days a week. They are gaining weight and improving while being housed indoors. As a reminder to the news, 9 of the adult dogs are still in a temporary housing situation at a Spokane shelter and are in need of permanent or foster home care. They range in age from young to a 7 year old boy named Drake who is "in need".

I left a comment earlier and it's not here. Not sure what happened. The owners of these poor babies need to be held accountable for their total disregard for the health, happiness & welfare of their 4 legged family members. This matter never should have gotten so far out of hand!! I hope they all survive to see their way to new loving families for Xmas. They sure deserve it!!
