"LINCOLN" SCREENWRITER ADMITS TAKING LIBERTIES WITH THE TRUTH

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- The guy who wrote the screenplay for "Lincoln" has acknowledged that Connecticut's congressmen did not vote against the constitutional amendment outlawing slavery, as the movie implies. Tony Kushner says he changed the votes to reinforce how close the decision was. He says he made up new names for the Connecticut men casting the votes so it wouldn't seem that the real congressmen did it. He says making changes is a common thing to do in an historical drama. Connecticut Congressman Joe Courtney had complained about the discrepancy because he didn't want moviegoers to think the state's delegation was "on the wrong side of history." He hopes the movie will be changed before it's released on DVD.
