Volcanoes, Chile and Argentina

On the border between Chile and the Catamarca Province of Argentina lies a vast field of currently dormant volcanoes. Over time, these volcanoes have laid down a crust of magma roughly 3.5 kilometers thick. The intense blue features in this 1999 Landsat 7 image are playa lakes and ponds and surrounding salt deposits. The deeper lakes appear darker. Shallower areas in the lakes and moist salt deposits are lighter blue. Dry, salt-encrusted sediments adjacent to the lakes and ponds appear white. Chile has 36 historically active volcanoes, more than any other South American country.
