Seattle basketball arena approved
Credit: City of Seattle
The hopes of Seattle Sonics fans got a huge boost Oct. 15 when the Seattle City and King County councils voted to approve a new basketball/hockey arena. The location will be just south of Safeco Field in the SODO neighborhood. But there are still some hurdles to clear. An environment impact review must be completed, there’s a pending lawsuit over the impact on traffic near the Port of Seattle, opposition by the Seattle Mariners, and investor Chris Hansen must first secure an NBA franchise to play at the facility before construction can begin.
