Thrill of victory. Agony of defeat.
Oak Harbor Judoka Marti Malloy pulled off an upset in her first match at the Olympics on July 30 and rode that all the way to a bronze medal. She almost had a shot at the gold, but fell to eventual silver medalist Corina Caprioriu from Romania. Tacoma’s Travis Stevens was not so fortunate the next day. He went to Golden Score (overtime) against Germany’s Ole Bischof in a brutal match that had to be stopped twice because Stevens was bleeding from the head. Neither man scored, so the judges gave it to Bischof. Stevens then lost his bronze medal match to Canada's Valois-Fortier Antoine.
