The Northern Lights have been visible this week in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Valerie Pond went out with her Canon EOS 60D and took some amazing pictures.
The photos were taken at Hidden Lake, about 25 miles north of the city, between about 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
According to Space.com, the arrival of the autumnal equinox, which occurred Saturday, increases the chances of an aurora display. The other time of year for a spectacular show is the vernal equinox - the first day of spring.
The times around the equinoxes are when geomagnetic storms - disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field - are strongest.
