EL PASO, Texas (AP) – It was cancer that claimed the life of the actor who helped make George Jefferson a household name. The medical examiner in El Paso, Texas says Sherman Hemsley died from a cancerous tumor that ended up blocking a large vein. Hemsley died at his home in El Paso on June 24. He was the star of the hit television sitcom "The Jeffersons" and the show from which it was spun-off, "All In The Family." The Jeffersons was one of TV's longest-running and most successful sitcoms -- and was most notable for its mostly black cast and point of view, both unusual for that time in American history.
