Super Moon

For those of you who might be wondering about the bright light beaming through your bedroom window during the night here is the culprit. Referred to by scientists as a super moon, it is in perigee, closest point from the earth in its orbit, (an event that only happens every 18 years). The full moon at perigee appears about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee, furthest point from the earth in its orbit. The lunar illusion will continue through Sunday, March 20, 2011. This image of the full moon taken at 4:00 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2011 in Jacksonville, N.C.
