Longtime residents are rarely surprised when the Skokomish River floods, but Wednesday was different.
Days of heavy rains pushed the river to a moderate flood stage early Wednesday, nearly breaking the all-time record set in December 2007.
“We can’t get out of our house,” said Kelly Pierson, who had to use waders to meet his wife across the flooded river.
Repeated flooding caused them to put their home on a raised foundation in 2000.
They’ve learned to live with a flooded yard and driveway, especially in November.
“It’s a hardship,” said wife Toni Ochoa Pierson, “But you kind of get used to it.”
