LAPWAI, Idaho.—Idaho State Police said a man fell asleep while driving Friday evening and crashed into an embankment before his car caught on fire near Lapwai.
The driver, 22-year-old Jared Uhlenkott, and one passenger were both taken to Tri-State Medical Center with unknown injuries.
Authorities said Uhlenkott was driving southbound on Highway 95 when he fell asleep and crossed over the center line, went off the roadway, and down an embankment. Idaho State Police said the car travelled along the fence line until it hit a rock and came to stop.
Both Uhlenkott and the passenger were able to get out of the car before it became engulfed in flames according to police.
Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office and Tribal Police assisted Idaho State Police, who launched an ongoing investigation into the crash.
