KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho -- The Kootenai County Sheriffs Office geared up for Memorial Day Weekend by putting more marine deputies on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Kootenai County recorded 38 boating-equivalents of DUI’s. The rest of the counties in Idaho recorded 18 combined.

Ten deputies finished their training. They are prepared to be patrolling the water over Memorial Day Weekend.

“They enforce all the laws on the water just as a patrol guy would do on the road,” said Lieutenant Stu Miller of the Kootenai County Sheriffs Office. “On a road we know they got stopped for a speeding violation. On the water they don't know why we stopped them sometimes.”

The unit also reminded everyone to wear a life jacket. The water might be cold even though it is warm outside.
