COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho -- Idaho State Patrol released the names of the Coeur d’Alene police officers form a fatal officer-involved shooting in June.
ISP identified the officers as Sgt. Greg Moore, Officer Johann Schmitz, and Officer Jacob Nielsen.
Investigators with ISP also said the suspect, Thomas White, 28, ignored multiple requests to drop his gun June 6 and eventually pointed it at officers.
"Mutual exchanges of shots were fired by White and three Coeur d'Alene officers," ISP said in a written statement.
It was still unclear who fired the first shot in the incident.
Officials said the shooting began with a domestic disturbance that night on Dragon Fly Drive, near E. Timber Lane. Neighbors said the situation turned hostile and White was shot just minutes after police arrived.
"I'll never forget the gunfire I heard. It was full-on assault," said neighbor Sean Granger. "It was overkill, overshooting. It was just insane.”
Police said White walked out of a home with a gun before they arrived, and then went to a house next-door. Granger said White was friends with the family living there.
"He got upset, [and] went over to the neighbor's house. Neighbor called 911. Cops came. They shot him,” Granger said.
