OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- As lawmakers gaveled in a second special session, one deadline already looms immediately.

State officials said Wednesday they'll start sending out millions of dollars in refund checks on Thursday because of a court ruling on the estate tax -- even though lawmakers have been considering a patch to keep that money.

The legislative fix is one of the bills that the Senate majority has offered in exchange for reform bills they are seeking. Officials say that if a fix isn't made to the law, it could cost the state $160 million over the next two years. Senate leaders say they're close to a deal, and the House said a vote could come Thursday, just in time to prevent the first $13 million the Department of Revenue says it will send to 10 estates. Additional checks are still being processed to be sent out in coming weeks.
