SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — President Barack Obama has named Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker to a new task force studying the impacts of climate change on local communities.
The White House announced Friday that Becker was one of about two dozen mayors, governors and tribal leaders on the task force.
The Obama administration says the task force will advise the White House on how to respond to severe storms, wildfires and other impacts of climate change.
The task force will also prescribe ways bridges, roads and flood control measures can withstand the effects of climate change such as rising temperatures.
Before he was elected mayor, Becker served as a Democrat in the Utah House of Representatives for 11 years.
