SPOKANE -- The Spokane Police Guild reached a tentative agreement Wednesday with the city to save 12 officer jobs.

22 positions were on the chopping block to help the city balance a $7-million budget shortfall.  19 of those jobs are empty because of retirement and a hiring freeze.

The city may hire 10 officers to fill some of those open spots if the proposal passes on December 4th.

I'm glad they are going to be able to save these police jobs. I hope the proposal passes Dec. 4th. Spokane can use all the police they can get.

Can we get back to talking about the fact that 12 cops get to continue to protect Spokane streets? Where the hell did this turn into a debate about capitalism/comunism? We need MORE COPS Spokane! More cops = less crime, proven time and time again.

empyrius-I hesitate to interject a little fact and logic in the discussion but here goes. Mr. Webster gives a very concise definition to capitalism. "an economic system in which investment and ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations, esp. as contrasted to cooperatively or state-owned means of wealth". Being a capitalist allowed me to work 16/18 hour days, most often 6/7 days each week, develope a one-man business that grew to employ over 100 employees (all of which were supplied with health insurance, vacations and very competitive wages.). Capitalism can be a self driving force to better one's lot in life and thereby provide more help and assistance to those less able to provide for them selves. This basis of the American economy must be an attraction to those who throughout our history haved risked their lives to come into our country. Name a better alternate.

There is no "hating on the police" going on here bro. You know what, I, disdaining capitalism as I do, and "hating" every time I hear corporations and politicians refer 2 us as "consumers", I, I would feel that being paid any money 4 helping and keeping safe our fellow man is like totally bogus 2 begin with! If I need 2 make money 2 help my fellow man, well, I have failed already, b/c helping and keeping safe my fellow man would b more than payment enough! You would not need 2 pay me 4 stepping in front of a bullet 2 save another human beings life! If I see a child fall into the Spokane river, my brain is not going 2 say, "o, I wonder how much I will get paid if I save him/her". Bro please, c'mon now . . . My point. Capitalism dehumanizes us all. My second point. I will be my brothers' keeper, and u do not need 2 pay me to do that, I will do that b/c that is what Christians do. My third point. Your beloved capitalism is predicated upon competition and the bottom line right . . .

You want to put your life on the line and your well being for what, $10.00 an hour?? Try telling that to your family Empyrius or your spouse and kids. In a time of recession, we need to keep our priorities straight, public safety and public health. If they have to close the libraries and parks, so be it, we can get them back later. We can't afford as a society to have a low staffed Fire Dept and Police Dept. And those who are always whining and hating Police, are part of the dirt bags in our communities in the first place who are always having run-ins with the law and getting arrested and getting tickets etc.

Why do government employees have a union?!? I thought unions were evil incarnate? They bust them up in the private sector, Wal-Mart makes their employees sign a contract stating they cannot organize! Communism man communism! I will do the cops' job for half the going wage!
