Update from Spokane Police Department, 4:15 p.m. Thursday:

Ofc. Graves was released from the hospital last night.  He is currently recuperating from his injuries and is expected to return to work in a few weeks.

Previous coverage:

SPOKANE -- A Spokane Police Officer is in serious condition after being rear-ended by another vehicle.

Investigators say just before 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Officer Jeff Graves was on Maple Street, just south of Sinto Avenue, dealing with a citizen who needed assistance.  He was in the vehicle, sitting in the driver's seat, when the crash happened.

Officers on the scene suspect the driver, 54-year-old Debra Hatcher, may have been under the influence of some kind of substance.  Hatcher was arrested for Vehicular Assault.

Officer Grave's injuries are serious but not life threatening.
