SALEM – Oregon’s latest lottery winner credits Girl Scout cookies for luring him to the win – sort of.
Shamus Harmon said he noticed Girl Scouts selling cookies outside the Market Street Fred Meyer in Salem and decided he needed some cash to buy some treats.
So he made a quick stop at the ATM to get some cash, bought some cookies and then decided to check his lottery tickets at the customer service counter.
“I gave the person at the counter my Powerball®, Mega Millions® and Win for Life tickets to check. The Win for Life ticket had a message the clerk hadn’t seen before,” he recalled. “After doing a bit more checking, she said that I had won the Win for Life jackpot! We were all in a bit of shock!”
Harmon claimed his Win for Life top prize of $1,000 a week for life on Monday, February 17, at the Lottery office in Salem.
Winners have the choice of receiving their prize weekly or in a one-time payment. Harmon chose the weekly installments.
