SPOKANE, Wash. - The mother of the 2-year-old killed on the South Hill last year took the stand Monday, and admitted to verbally abusing her four kids. Jason Obermiller is on trial for the murder of Lovina Rainey's daughter, Addy Hoyt, who was found dead last year. He is the ex-boyfriend of Rainey.
Tuesday, Rainey testified she fed her children pizza, then got high in her bedroom before leaving to party and do more methamphetamine.
The defense challenged her recollection of what happened and the overall timing of Addy’s death as central part of their case.
Obermiller left the South Hill home before midnight that night. Rainey initially told detectives she left the home around 10:00 p.m. that night, but the defense argued a text message shows she left the home around 2:00 a.m.
Rainey said Obermiller put Adalynn to bed that night, while she was across the hall getting high.
The defense argued Obermiller had already left the house at the time of the murder.
When Adalynn died, the medical examiner testified earlier, she had a bite of pizza still in her mouth that she did not get to swallow.
The defense spent a lot of time questioning Rainey about when that pizza was given to Addy.
Many of the witnesses in this case has admitted to using drugs and not being able to keep track of time well while high.
The prosecution questioned Rainey about her behavior while high on meth as well.
“When you've been like this have you ever lashed out and hit any of your children?” a prosecuting attorney asked. Rainey said no.
Monday, Rainey testified she was verbally abusive to her children, but said she never physically hurt them. She also testified she never saw Obermiller be mean to her children either.
The prosecution has several more witnesses to call before the defense gets their turn. Obermiller is also expected to testify.
