Barge hits lock, Columbia closed to vessels

PORTLAND - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says navigation on the Columbia River has been shut down because a barge hit a gate at the navigation lock of the John Day Dam.

The corps says the gate, on the upstream side of the dam, suffered "significant damage," but no people were hurt.
The lock raises and lowers vessels so they can get around the dam.
