NAMPA, Idaho -- Fourteen construction workers were injured this afternoon when a bridge collapsed during a concrete pour for the new Robinson Boulevard Overpass, according to Nampa Fire Deputy Chief Doug Strosnider.

The $8.5 million contract to reconstruct the overpasses was awared to Graham Construction and Management of Spokane, Wash. NewsChannel 7 phoned them about the incident but they refused to comment at this time.

A company official told KREM 2 News that "several" of the 14 were from Spokane but did not have an official tally.

Strosnider says non of the injured workers suffered life-threatening injuries. Some of the injured had broken bones and lacerations. They were taken to three area hospitals -- Mercy Medical Center in Nampa, St. Alphonsus and St. Luke's in Boise. They all work for Graham Construction of Spokane, Wash.

The accident happened around 1:15 p.m. The span is being constructed on the interstate near the northwest corner of the former overpass.

This is part of the I-84 widening project from Meridian to Nampa. Both the Black Cat Road and Robinson Boulevard overpasses were torn down in September and were in the process of being rebuilt to accommodate more lanes of traffic flowing beneath them.

The Idaho Transportation Department said the columns that support the overpasses were scheduled to go up tonight but that work has been postponed indefinitely.

"We are relieved that no one was seriously hurt by this accident," stated ITD Director Pamela Lowe. "We will begin immediately to work with the contractor to learn what happened."

ITD District 3 regional engineer Shawna King said in September that this was an ambitious time schedule. After taking the overpasses down in just one weekend, it was their goal to have them rebuilt quickly.

The accident has not impacted motorists traveling along Interstate 84 since it did not occur on the freeway.
