PORTLAND -- Police have made nearly 150 arrests in an ongoing prostitution sting along 82nd Avenue, the department reported Friday.

Since Aug. 13, police have arrested 88 prostitutes, 56 johns and one suspected pimp. Three of those arrested were juveniles, police said.

Three precincts have been involved in the sting, working with a patrol unit responsible for reducing prostitution and crime on the city’s east side.

Earlier this month, northeast Portland residents met to discuss ways they could help deter prostitution and related crime.

Speakers from other major cities have come to help residents and police address the issue.

Last month, a mother and daughter who had grown tired of the prostitution confronted some streetwalkers on 82nd. They claim they were maced just hours after a march that had been organized to “take back the neighborhood” from prostitutes.

Many neighbors want the area to be declared a prostitution-free zone, but police said their hands were tied after Mayor Tom Potter did away with the zoning laws.
