Boy found dead in canal
06:58 AM PDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2008
CANYON COUNTY -- A dive team has found the body of a three-year-old boy that is believed to have drowned Tuesday in a canal near the Idaho-Oregon border.
Canyon County Sheriff Chris Smith says the search was focused in a rural area southwest of Parma, not far from the boy's home.
Eagle dive teams members are working to recover the body.
The child's father reported him missing around 2 p.m.
The boy's bike was found in canal a short time later, but there was no sign of the boy. The boy's body was found about 300 yards away from where the bike entered the canal.
Around a dozen local law enforcement officers and residents assisted in the search, and a helicopter was brought in.
The local irrigation district reduced the water flow to the canal to help crews with their search effort.
The child's name has not been released.
