Astronomers were tracking the 22-ton Jules Verne spacecraft as it finished the final orbits around Earth Monday.
Recently, the ship helped deliver supplies to the International Space Station -- where it also sometimes served as a cabin for crews.
Experts said the craft was visible from Earth as it passed overhead in the night sky, sometimes glowing as brightly as the North Star.
