Woman killed in boating crash on Lake Washington
03:23 PM PDT on Sunday, September 28, 2008
SEATTLE - A 37-year-old woman was killed and two people were injured when a power boat slammed into a sailboat on Lake Washington Saturday night.
Police say a 17-year-old boy was driving the speed boat just after 9 p.m. when he crashed into the sailboat near Lakewood Marina.
"It looks like the speedboat overtook the sailboat, which may have been stopped, we're not sure about that, went up over the top of the back. Apparently they could see it coming and tried to get it to stop, hit the woman and she was thrown from the sailboat, and may have been struck again by the speedboat as it went over the stern of the sailboat," said Neil Low of Seattle Police.
Police say there were three people on board the sailboat. The woman died at the scene. A 45-year-old man was taken to the hospital with back injuries. The third person was not injured.
The driver of the speedboat had minor injuries. His 16-year-old passenger received facial injuries.
Police say the 17-year-old might have been speeding. They don't yet know if alcohol was a factor.
"It's tough when you go out to have a good time and things like that happen," said Lakewood Marina manager Randy Johnson.
Johnson said the owner of the sailboat has had a boat at the marina for 30 years.
