Police ID 2 killed in Canby Amtrak train crash

CANBY, Ore. -- Two people were killed Friday night when an Amtrak train collided with a vehicle leaving the Clackamas County Fair.

The crash happened around 10:19 at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Highway 99 E in Canby.

Clackamas County Fairgrounds spokesperson Heather Alexander said a vehicle tried to exit out the back end of the parking lot where there is no actual exit, ended up on the tracks and was struck by the train.

Both the train and the vehicle caught fire.

Canby officials said 33-year-old Neptali Joel  Ruiz-Contreras and 32-year-old Arnulfo Ezequel Garcia-Ruiz of Woodburn died in the crash.

Amtrak spokesperson Karina Romero said none of the 50 passengers on the train were injured.

The 509 train was headed to Eugene from Seattle.

All the passengers on board were taken to a building on the fairgrounds where they were awaiting taxi’s to pick them up, according to Romero.

The investigation was continuing.
