THE DALLES, Ore. –A man driving with a car full of juveniles was shot and killed after he reportedly fired on an Oregon State trooper during a traffic stop on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles Thursday.

It all started just before 1 p.m. when a State trooper pulled over a vehicle driven by a man with three juvenile passengers who were not younger than 10 years old, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.

The driver reportedly got out and fired on the trooper, hitting him in the side. The trooper returned fire and the driver got back into his vehicle, Hastings said.

The man was then found about a half mile down the road slumped over in his vehicle. The trooper tried to revive the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Hastings said.

The trooper was taken to a nearby hospital with a mild wound to his side. He is expected to be OK, Hastings said.

Westbound lanes were reopened around 6:30 p.m. and eastbound lanes were opened shortly after, according to ODOT.

Traffic was backed up for miles West of Biggs Junction.
