MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - Crews have installed a new section of the I-5 bridge over the Skagit River that collapsed four months ago. The Department of Transportation expected to reopen the bridge Sunday afternoon.
The state Transportation Department closed the span's temporary crossing around 7 p.m. on Saturday night. Crews planned to reopen the span to traffic at 7 a.m. Sunday morning but those plans had been delayed several times.
Officials had cautioned that the operation was complex and that the closure could be extended if things didn't go according to plan.
There was expected to be additional nighttime closures in the weeks to come as crews retrofitted the overhead bridge supports.
