CALDWELL – A 10-month-old baby has been accidentally shot in the cheek by a 3-year-old child, according to the Canyon County sheriff.

Deputies and paramedics were called around 4:15 p.m. Monday to a home on the 25000 block of Middleton Road. When they arrived they found a 10-month-old shot once in the cheek. The infant was taken by ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise. The injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators say the two young children were left unattended in a vehicle when the 3-year-old found a loaded handgun and fired it. The mother heard the shot, rushed to car and called 911.

“This was a terrifying event that could have been even more tragic – a 10-month-old or 3-year-old could have lost their lives yesterday.  Unintentional shootings like this one are preventable.  It is critical that gun owners be responsible with the storage of their weapons and lock firearms in a safe place away from children,” said Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue.

The investigation is ongoing. No charges or citations have been filed.
