TURNER, Ore. – A suspect who shot and killed a woman after firing on cops in Turner was arrested after an 8-hour standoff when the SWAT team busted into his apartment and rescued a 2-year-old child, police said.

It all started around 9:30 p.m. Friday when police responded to a domestic violence call at an apartment in the 7300 block of 3rd Street SE and encountered a man and woman walking down the stairs from a second-story apartment, said Don Thomson with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

When officers tried to talk to the couple, the man, later identified as 24-year-old Dustin Michael Bryant, pulled out a gun and fired at them, Thomson said.

Rather than return fire, police dove for cover, narrowly getting hit by bullets. While Bryant was shooting, however, the woman tried to run away and was shot dead, Thomson said.

Bryant then ran up the stairs into an apartment where he held a child hostage for the next 8 hours, Thomson said.

Law enforcement from multiple agencies then descended on the scene, teaming up to take shifts in the frigid fall night.

Hostage negotiators spent hours talking and even texting with Bryant, trying to convince him to release his hostage as the SWAT team carefully evacuated the rest of the apartment complex, Thomson said.

By 5:30 a.m., negotiators decided to send in the SWAT team.

The SWAT team made a tactical entry into the apartment, took Bryant into custody and rescued the child. Bryant suffered a minor injury in the melee. He was taken to the hospital before getting booked in the Marion County Jail, Thomson said.

Authorities will not release the name of the woman or the 2-year-old until the family is notified.
