GOVERNMENT CAMP -- One person has died and eight others injured in a two vehicle head-on crash mid-morning Saturday on Highway 35, about five miles north of Mount Hood Meadows.

About 10:30, a GMC Yukon with three male teens was southbound near milepost 69. The roadway was covered with snow, said Oregon State Police Sgt. Julie Wilcox.

The driver of the Yukon tried to pass another vehicle and lost control in the path of a northbound Jeep Cherokee with six people.

The Jeep's driver tried to tried to veer to the right but was struck on the driver's side. The Jeep came to rest in a ditch.

The Jeep's male driver died at the scene. Two adult women and three children were hurt. The children were taken by Lifeflight to Legacy Emanuel and OHSU hospitals. The women were taken by ambulance to a Hood River hospital.

The three teens in the Yukon were taken by ambulance to the Hood River hospital and the male driver was then taken by Lifeflight to OHSU.

Further details were not available.The highway remained closed late Saturday afternoon.
