ORTING, Wash. -- A man was shot and killed by an off-duty Fife police officer outside the officer’s home in Orting Tuesday night. Investigators are trying to determine if the officer was targeted.
It happened around 10 p.m. in the 19600 block of 207th Street Court E.
A Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said the 21-year-old suspect had been calling 911 and dispatch centers, claiming to have been involved in an earlier shooting.
It was shortly after those calls that neighbors reported the suspect was ranting and raving in the streets.
He went to the officer’s house and was asked to leave. Police say that’s when the man got into his own car in the officer’s driveway and started revving the engine. The man pulled a gun and fired at the officer’s home, police said. The officer fired back, killing the man.
Witnesses said they heard seven or eight gunshots.
A rifle and handgun were recovered at the scene.
Police believe the suspect lived in the neighborhood and knew where the officer lived.
