Fire near Ellensburg grows to 3,600 acres

A new wildfire that started Saturday night on a ridge north of Ellensburg grew to 3,600 acres overnight Saturday. Fire officials believe it was caused by lightning.

The Snag Canyon Fire started around 6 p.m. Saturday about 12 miles north of Ellensburg.  

There have been some reports of destroyed structures, but fire officials have not confirmed those reports.

Level-3 evacuations have been initiated in the areas between Wilson and Naneum Road, north of Charlton Road. As well as the Sun East area and Robbins Road north of Smithson Road.  

Red Cross staff has opened an emergency shelter at the Mercer Creek Church in Ellensburg. The Fairgrounds is open for emergency shelter for livestock and animals.
