TWIN FALLS – A man discovered a dead body Sunday morning in the attic of his Twin Falls home.

The man told police he's used to bad smells because animals have gotten stuck in the attic and died.

This time though, the odor was overpowering and what he found around 8 a.m. prompted an investigation.

Investigators say the body found in an attic on the 400 block of Idaho Street East was badly decomposed.

They do not know long it was there, as warmer afternoon temperatures can accelerate decomposition and cooler evening
temperatures can slow it down.

The body has not been identified.

Police are reviewing a missing persons report for a possible match.

"(The missing persons report is) an adult male individual that is somewhat delayed mentally who was reported missing some weeks ago that actually resided at the time of his disappearance just a couple of blocks from where this body was found," said Staff Sgt. Dan Lewin of the Twin Falls Police Department. "But it's preliminary and premature at this time to say whether or not they're connected."

The home is a rental property and the attic can only be accessed from outside.

Lewin said he doesn't believe the man who found the body is considered a suspect, but he doesn't know for certain since he's not involved in the investigation.

Police say it's too early to tell if foul play was involved.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning in Ada County.
