ABDERDEEN, WASH. -- An inmate from the Grays Harbor County Jail was shot and killed on Friday afternoon.
The shooting happened outside Grays Harbor Community Hospital after the inmate tried to escape.
The 40-year-old inmate was being treated at the hospital's intensive care unit and was about to be discharged and sent back to jail. He somehow freed himself from his shackles and ran out of the hospital.
Wearing no clothes, the inmate ran across a street next to the hospital toward another medical office building. He was struck by a police taser, but it failed to stop him.
The inmate then grabbed a woman. Witnesses said he threw her down and was apparently assaulting her with some sort of a weapon.
A county corrections deputy said he told the inmate to drop the weapon. When the inmate refused, he was shot and killed.
The man's name has not been released. The hostage was not seriously injured.
