MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - A driver was seriously injured when his car ran off a Mount Vernon road Thursday afternoon and hit a tree, splitting the car in half.

The Washington State Patrol said speed appeared to be a factor in the one-car crash that happened on the northbound Interstate 5 on-ramp from College Way.

The front half of the car ended up against the tree, while the back half was several yards behind it.

The condition of the driver was not immediately known.
