BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The state has taken a first step toward shuttering a public charter school that is suing Idaho officials in federal court for barring the Bible and other religious texts from the classroom.

Nampa Classical Academy board member Erik Makrush says the Idaho Public Charter School Commission voted Thursday to begin the lengthy process of revoking its charter because the school failed to produce budget documents on time.

The academy was supposed to provide the commission with budget materials for the coming school year 30 days before the meeting, but Makrush says the documents weren't ready until 10 days beforehand.

School officials, who have abandoned plans to use the Bible and other texts for their literary and historic qualities until the matter is settled in court, say they want to work with commissioners and intend on staying open.
