SEATTLE – A man suspected of assaulting a security guard and threatening officers died Wednesday morning after being shot multiple times by Seattle police at Gas Works Park.
It started just after 2:30 a.m. when police were contacted by a park security guard who reported being assaulted by a man who had been drinking heavily, said Seattle Police Assistant Chief Nick Metz. Police say the suspect attacked when the guard asked him to put out a small fire he had lit.
At least five officers responded and made contact with the man. That’s when, according to Metz, the man came at officers with a broken glass bottle.
Officers tried to use a Taser on the man, but that did not stop him. Two officers fired multiple shots, hitting the suspect.
Metz said one of the officers fell down while trying to back away from the suspect and that the suspect fell on top of the officer after being shot.
The suspect was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he died.
The two officers who fired shots will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard when officers fire their weapons.
