PORTLAND, Oregon – The public memorial for a K-9 killed in the line of duty began at Hillsboro Stadium Monday, with hundreds of officers and local citizens showing their support.

Mick, a 2-year-old German Shepherd, died from a single bullet wound after he and his partner officer Jeff Dorn confronted a robbery suspect on April 16.

Dorn, who was injured in the shooting, later credited Mick for saving his life.  The necropsy showed that Mick was shot at close range, while lunging in the air.

Officer Dorn spoke during Monday's memorial, thanking the public. "Words cannot express the gratitude I have regarding your support," he said. "I knew from when I first met Mick, he was special."

Dorn's wife and children were seated around him.  His young sons could not hold back tears over the dog who was not only a protector of the community, but part of their family.

The boys shared a list they wrote, of the top 5 things they learned from Mick.

“The most important thing that we have learned is that dad goes to work every night with the best partner ever. We know that Mick loved dad just as much as we do. Mick saved our dad’s life and we will always love him, they said”

The tribute also included words from Governor John Kitzhaber, Police Chief Mike Reese and fellow K-9 officer Shawn Gore.

"Only those who hold the leash in harms way can truly understand this relationship," Gore said.  "This event reaffirms our mission as K-9 handlers."

The public was invited to Mick’s memorial.  Officers lined the stadium, including many K-9 teams and the Portland mayor, to honor Mick and his team.

"It was a scary moment for officer Dorn and his family," Mayor Charlie Hales said.  "We want to say to officer Dorn, 'Thank you for your support' and we want to say to Mick, 'You were a good friend and true.'"

Officer Dorn acknowledged this is a difficult time for his family and fellow K-9 teams, but the public support really helps.

"Mick lived and died as a true puppy and as a hero in my heart," Dorn said.

Hillsboro Stadium is located at 4450 NW 229th Ave., near the MAX Blue Line NW 229th and Evergreen Parkway stop. Police recommend using TriMet to get there, as parking is limited.
