A two-alarm fire destroyed much of Evergreen Hall at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup just before midnight Sunday night, hours after the Spring Fair concluded.
About 100 yards of food stands on the north end of Evergreen Hall was destroyed, including the Sales family food stand, which is home of the Krusty Pup. The roof of the building collapsed.
The south end of the Hall housed a petting farm during the Spring Fair and dozens of animals were still inside when the fire started. Firefighters rescued 49 animals including chickens, rabbits, llamas, sheep and goats.
“If it wasn’t for my driver, Bill Thompson, a lot of animals would have died today,” said firefighter Kyle Martin.
One piglet was killed in the fire.
Evergreen Hall is one of the oldest buildings at the fairgrounds. It was remodeled last year to house the agricultural and floral departments at the Washington State Fair last fall.
The cause of fire was not immediately known.
