Since 1983, the Pacific Northwest Ballet's rendition of "Nutcracker" has been a hit in Seattle. Audiences have raved about Maurice Sendak's costumes and sets, and Kent Stowell's choreography. But the PNB announced Wednesday that the 2014 staging of the production will be the last, The Seattle Times reported.
A new version of the musical will hit the stage in 2015, with costumes by Ian Falconer and choreography from a 1945 rendition of the play.
PNB artistic director Peter Boal said the decision to switch things up came from analyzing ticket sales and the age of the current production. Since the recession, ticket revenue has significantly decreased. The new version of the production has received substantial donations.
Audiences can see the current version of "Nutcracker" one last time during the 2014 holiday season.
