HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A new type of mental training may have saved a Hillsboro officer when gunfight erupted Friday night after police pulled over a car for having a burned out license plate light.

Police said a K-9 alerted them that drugs could be inside the car, and as a female officer approached the four people inside, a passenger on the driver's side jumped out.

"He gets out of the car and just as the officer is going to stop and check him, he pulls out a .22-caliber revolver," said Lt. Michael Rouches with the Hillsboro Police Department.

The officer managed to escape the bullets and her partner returned fire.

The 30-year-old suspect, who police said has a criminal record in Washington County, later died at Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

The officer who was fired on suffered minor injuries to her hand.

"These shooting situations are completely mental," said Lt. Rouches.

Hillsboro police recently started a new type of mental training, which involves meditation and yoga.

The department is even featured in the latest edition of Mindful Magazine.

It's training that may have helped officers involved in this latest shooting incident.

"That's new training we're integrating because we're realizing its not just about tactical training anymore. It's also what's in an officers mind and how they react and how they know what their reaction will be," said Rouches.

The two officers involved in the shooting are said to be experienced. Two other officers pulled up to the scene during the shooting. All four officers are on paid leave.

During the investigation. The three other passengers in the car were taken in for questioning, but were not charged and have been released.
