One of the 12 victims in Monday’s Washington, DC, Navy Yard shooting was a graduate of the University of Washington.

NBC 4 Washington reports retired Navy Capt. Michael Arnold, 59, was an avid pilot.

Arnold graduated from the Naval Academy and served for 29 years before retiring last October. Arnold also held two master’s degrees from UW, although it wasn't immediately clear what those degrees were in.

His uncle reportedly said Arnold worked at the Navy Yard on a team that designed vessels such as the USS Makin Island, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship used by the Marine Corps.

Arnold and his wife were married for 30 years and have two grown sons.
