A man and a woman were seriously injured Friday night when they were stabbed multiple times by a stranger.
Police say at about 10:30 p.m., the two were walking in the 300 block of South Jackson Street when the woman was suddenly confronted by a the suspect, who produced a small knife and began stabbing the woman repeatedly in the torso.
The man she had been walking with attempted to intervene and the suspect turned on him and began stabbing the male victim repeatedly in the neck and torso.
Officers from the SWAT and gang units arrived on the scene first and found the suspect standing near the victims, still holding the knife.
The suspect dropped the knife and was taken into custody without further incident.
Fire department medics responded to the scene and transported both victims to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Police say the circumstances surrounding the assaults remain under active investigation but there are indications that the suspect “was operating at a diminished mental capacity.”
