TROUTDALE, Ore. -- Divers on Thursday found the body of a young boy who drowned at Glenn Otto Park in the Sandy River earlier this month.
The divers had returned to look in areas that were not previously searched and found the body just before noon, authorities told KGW.
The 7 year old was playing with a 9-year-old friend when both began to struggle and the younger boy vanished in deep water on Sunday, July 1, according to Troutdale police. AMR lifeguards were able to pull the older boy to safety. Neither child was wearing a life vest.
Police said the park provides free life jackets for swimmers.
"It's heart-wrenching you know, it's unfortunate," said Sgt. Carey Kaer of the Troutdale Police Dept. "The life jackets are there to use. There's no reason you shouldn't just grab one and put it on your child."
Dive teams from the Portland Fire Bureau and Multnomah County Sheriff's Office led the recovery effort.
